Collaborative Law Basics

June 25, 2021

Collaborative law is a formal process involving face-to-face meetings with family law parties, their respective lawyers, and sometimes additional professionals such as financial advisors, child specialists, divorce coaches, etc., who work together to negotiate and resolve family law issues.  The goal of the Collaborative Law process is to preserve constructive relationships between separating parties, which can be particularly important when children are involved and there are co-parenting requirements.

Through a series of four-way meetings, the separating couple and their professional team will exchange information and negotiate mutually acceptable outcomes while ensuring both parties’ needs, goals, and legal rights are considered and respected.  Each party’s lawyer will have special training in Collaborative Law.  The role of the Collaborative lawyer is to represent their client first and foremost, in a manner that encourages constructive communication for the purpose of facilitating better solutions for the family involved.
